Natural Trauma Care

What if the unthinkable happens? You have an accident, but you are nowhere near a hospital. What do you do?

Is there such a thing as “natural trauma care”? The answer is a resounding YES.

1. Small nicks, cuts or scratches: You can dab on cornstarch. It will stop the bleeding almost immediately. Additionally, oddly enough, spider webs work very well if you can find some. Grab a good sized spider web, blow off the spider and any other bugs or debris and wrap it around or place over the injured area. Once the bleeding stops, remove the web and clean the cut thoroughly.

2. A bloody nose: If you are experiencing a bloody nose open a bottle of vinegar and inhale deeply through your nose. Keep doing so and the bleeding should stop within a short time. Vinegar burns the blood vessels cauterizing them closed.

3. For a bleeding wound: Apply a little sugar and let it melt over the wound. This will stop the blood from continuing to flow.

4. If you suspect a blood clot: You can take the herb Dong Quai to help break up the clot but do try and seek out medical attention as soon as possible as blood clots can be incredibly dangerous depending on location.

5. Ice: Reducing the temperature drastically slows bleeding as well as helps prevent future inflammation and bruising at the site of injury.

6. Small wounds:  Cayenne pepper sprinkled into the wound will help to stop the bleeding as well black pepper.

7. Splinters: To remove small splinters from the skin easily, wet a bar of soap and rub the sharp end of a sewing needle in it, so that the needle has a liberal coating of soap. Then rub the soapy needle in the opposite direction of the splinter. As soon as the splinter has some soap in it, squeeze it, and it should come right out. This method is painless and is good for use on children. For removing splinters of glass from the skin pour some hydrogen peroxide on the skin. The splinter will bubble itself out after a few minutes. Do not squeeze as more tissue damage may occur.

8. Burns: The best thing for a burn is to apply cool water liberally. Do ensure that the water is not too hot or too cold. Blisters will be formed, but that is a part of the natural healing process. If you want to avoid blisters you could try one of these home remedies. Cut a tomato into wedges and rub one slice on the burn. The acid from the tomato takes the pain away and the burn will not blister. You can also use cold water and vinegar compresses until the pain goes away and then apply potato slices on the area.

9. After any injury for overall healing – Arnica Montana 1M (trauma care blend) Specifically designed to speed recovery from a major physical trauma, TraumaCare™ is generally considered too strong for a minor bump or bruise.

Would you recognize the warning signs of Spinal Stenosis?

From time to time, we all have the occasional ache or pain, especially as we age. It can be tempting to push it aside and focus on other things, keeping your mind distracted and off of the pain. As spinal stenosis occurs gradually over time, there is no sudden onset and symptoms tend to start out mild and barely noticeable and work their way up to life interrupting.

What is spinal stenosis?

Spinal Stenosis is the narrowing of the spinal column. This narrowing causes pressure on the spinal cord itself and the spaces (neural foramina) where the nerves leave the spinal cord. This can cause cramping, numbness, and pain in the legs, back, buttock area, neck, and even shoulders or arms.

  • Loss of balance, bladder and bowel control issues can occur.
  • Disks become drier
  • Disks may start to bulge
  • Both bones and ligaments may thicken – this is caused by chronic long-term swelling.
  • Symptoms may come and go over time
  • Symptoms may occur only with certain activities or movements
  • Spinal stenosis tends to feel better when rested
  • Numbness and tingling often accompany pain

What causes spinal stenosis?

  • Tumors of the spine
  • Injury that puts pressure on the nerve roots or the spinal cord
  • Herniated disk
  • Slipped disk
  • Spinal arthritis
  • Bone disease

Spinal Stenosis usually sets in and becomes noticeable around age 50 or older. It can cause the recognizable sign of age, in a lean forward in posture.

If you are experiencing symptoms it is important to seek out a proper diagnosis.  A MRI or CT Scan are both viable options. Much can be done through regular chiropractic care, activity modification, and exercise. Anti-inflammatories such as turmeric or bromelain are wonderful accompaniments to the therapy.

Fortunately, most are able to successfully manage the symptoms with these non-surgical and non-medical therapies, best results come when you seek treatment as early on as possible, helping to avoid the use of any medications or surgical procedures down the road.

Working with your body rather than against it is always the most viable option. Giving it the proper nutrition, supplementation, and adjustment of electrical pathways in the nervous system in order to allow it to heal itself offers you the very best possible prognosis.

Vitamins & Supplements – Are You Wasting Your Money?

Go to any grocery store, health food store or vitamin specialty shop and you will see shelf after shelf lined with colorful well-designed vitamin and supplement bottles. It’s confusing to say the very least. Comparing labels, you see many of the exact same ingredients. It is natural to assume the products to be “the same”, but what about quality and potency?

Are all supplements created equal?

Labeling can be deceptive. Many vitamin companies do not even produce or formulate their own products. They buy and relabel. The standards vary greatly from one company to another.  Quality and age of ingredients drastically affects absorption.

Vitamins begin to lose potency from the time they are created. Only 90% potency of what is listed on the label at the time of shipping is what is mandated. Light, heat, moisture, and oxidation can cause potency loss rather rapidly. Vitamins, Supplements, and Nutraceuticals are all perishable. Therefore, there are expiration dates on all bottles.

Synthetic vitamins may also be mislabeled as natural as the word natural can be misleading on a technical level. A manufacturer can use a mix of 10% natural and 90% synthetic and still label the product as natural. This greatly reduces the production cost, but it also reduces the effectiveness. Vitamins can also contain fillers which are potentially questionable such as hydrogenated oils, metals, inorganic elements, titanium oxide and magnesium stearate which hold no health benefit and could be potentially detrimental.

Ideally, our vitamin intake should come from our diet. It is not easy to eat perfectly and due to soil, which can be nutrient depleted, many fruits and vegetables do not pack the nutritional punch they used to. Because of this supplementation is often necessary.

On your own without testing, it is hard to know what your body really needs. Buying and taking vitamins can be like throwing everything at a wall to see what sticks. It is expensive to do so and often you are literally just flushing money down the drain. Visiting a Nutritional Response Therapist can allow you to pinpoint exactly what your body needs to complete your nutrient profile and fully support your health.

When working with Nutrition Specialists of Florida we use only top quality well-established companies that you can trust. We have chosen to work with Standard Process and Energetix.

Both companies produce all of their own products themselves, sourcing only high-quality, organic ingredients.

Aging Gracefully through Proper Nutrition

While genetics play a large part in how we age, lifestyle and nutrition are also key. There is no one “right diet” for everyone. We are all different and have differing nutritional requirements. A good baseline to start from is to eat a diet filled with wholesome nutrient rich foods.

Organic Vegetables, Fruits, Grass Fed Meats, Nuts, Seeds, and Plenty of Clean non-fluoridated water are the basics. Staying away from processed packaged foods, genetically modified foods, hydrogenated oils, fillers, and preservatives.

Our environment has many pollutants and toxins. From the water that we drink, the air we breathe, chemicals in our personal grooming products, medications we take and alcohol we may drink, to the food we eat – our bodies are constantly in contact and having to filter out all kinds of particles. They can get our delicate systems out of balance causing toxicity levels and nutritional deficiencies.

These deficiencies and toxins over time can cause damage to the structure of the body and deteriorate our health causing us to age at a more rapid rate than otherwise would happen naturally. If left unchecked and uncorrected it can lead to disease and eventually death.

Proper body maintenance over the course of your life can help combat this keeping you in the very best shape and health possible allowing you to live a longer healthier life.

“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” – Benjamin Franklin had the right idea. It is far easier to maintain and build up over a lifetime than it is to have to try and heal damage already done.

If you are looking for an effective beauty treatment – ditch the lotions, potions, and creams. Beauty radiates from the inside and it is rooted in how you feel. Health is beauty.

Personalized testing and nutritional services are available at Nutritional Specialists of Florida in Bonita Springs, Florida. Give us a call today to see how we can help you age the way it was intended – gracefully.

Artificial Sweeteners, the Ugly Truth

We have been duped. Somehow, we have all gotten it in our minds that calories are the enemy. Calories are not the enemy. They are simply a unit of energy contained in food which we, as humans, need to power our bodies.

Because of this, the food and drug industry has created their very own niche market and category. Artificial chemical sweeteners. While sugar rings in at only 16 calories per teaspoon, all its artificial counterparts come in at zero or nearly zero.

The question becomes: Is that small of a number of extra calories added to your diet worth the exchange?

Let’s compare.

FDA has recognized artificial sweeteners saccharin, aspartame, sucralose as GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe). But are they?

While it is difficult to lump these substances into one group because they are scientifically each their own compound, all artificial sweeteners are created in a lab and are man made. They trick your brain and induce the same metabolic response as sugar. They can be up to 600 times sweeter than sugar itself which makes them addicting.

Despite studies over the years naming them as cell growth inhibitors and possible carcinogenics they have been marked as safe for consumption by the National Cancer Institute. Artificial sweeteners have had numerous complaints lodged against them and been investigated as a possible cause of brain tumors, mental retardation, birth defects, epilepsy, Parkinson’s Disease, Fibromyalgia, and Diabetes. So far, the FDA has made no move towards regulation despite having the studies to back up the toxicity levels. http://www.fda.gov/ohrms/dockets/dailys/03/jan03/012203/02p-0317_emc-000199.txt

Outside of the safety question. Do they benefit a low-calorie diet?

Although zero calorie studies have shown that increased appetite is often a side effect of consuming these sweeteners. This can up the overall food intake and negate the calories saved through the low or no calories foods or drinks.

Consuming excess sugar can lead to health issues such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and metabolic issues, however, it is made in nature and derived from the sugar cane plant. According to a 1973 study done by Loma Linda University, when you consume 100 grams of sugar, equivalent to a one-liter bottle of soda, your white blood cells are 40% less effective at killing germs. This can cripple your immune system for up to 5 hours after eating sugar!

The best answer is to eliminate sugar both artificial and natural it all together. If you must sweeten, all natural Stevia is a natural herb which does not negatively affect health in small quantities. Make sure to read the ingredients. While it would seem that Stevia would be the only single ingredient that is not always the case. Look for pure Stevia as a standalone ingredient.

Nutrition Specialists of Florida would love to help you create a lifestyle change and boost your health. We can be reached at 239-947-1177 or by going to our contact page and sending an email.

Nutritional Response Testing – A Testimonial

Mid-September of this past year I began having serious heart palpitations. I felt nervous, anxious and jittery all the time. I kept expecting it to dissipate and go away, but instead, it got worse and worse until, sitting at work one day, I was sure I was going to have either a heart attack or stroke.

I went to NCH’s walk in clinic. They hooked me up to the EKG machines and listened to my symptoms. They felt they did not have the proper equipment to fully diagnose me and advised that I should go straight to the ER as it could be a pulmonary embolism.

Upon arriving at the ER they of course, drew blood and ran every test known to man. I was there a total of 7 hours to the tune of over $6000. Their conclusion? According to them, I was “completely fine” and “just stressed out”. Ativan was prescribed and I was sent on my merry way still feeling the same as when I arrived.

Despite their medical opinions, I know my body. I knew something felt physically wrong.

In thinking about my past health history, I realized I had healed several other ailments over the years by consulting with Chiropractors who did Nutritional Response Therapy. I didn’t, however, know of anyone locally.

As luck would have it, in doing a Google search for “Nutritional Response Therapists near me” up popped Dr. Gendron and www.chiropractorbonitasprings.com. I called and made an appointment immediately.

I was a mess. I wasn’t sleeping or eating and any little tiny stress would take me from just feeling worn out and exhausted to so stressed I literally felt on the verge of a heart attack. I filled out the assessment in the office and scored a 63 which is incredibly high. Dr. Gendron also administered a diagnostic cardiac test. I scored so badly I nearly fell off the bottom of the chart with my heart reacting like I was in my mid 70’s rather than the 41 years I am.

With complete faith in the process and in Dr. Gendron, I began my road back to health through Nutritional Response Therapy. He put me on a strict healthy eating regimen and eliminated wheat and sugar which I was testing as sensitive to.  Along with that he custom-tailored the Energetix cleanse, homeopathics and supplementation to fit what my body was lacking.

It was easy to follow, but I needed a LOT of detoxification. It took several weeks and lots of healing crisis’s. Slowly I began to feel human again. The palpitations slowed then stopped all together and I began to feel stronger and stronger.

I could not, for the life of me, figure out how I had gotten to such a dangerously toxic level. I have done cleanses over the past decade and kept myself very healthy overall.

As it turns out, in narrowing down the toxins and using some deductive reasoning in conjunction with Dr. Gendron, my dental work was the likely culprit. Old crowns which had metal alloy backings. I am severely allergic to nickel. It had been leaching into my system for 10+ years. It has now been replaced. My heart and body are strong again.

Had I not listened to my body and taken the advice of NCH and their medical staff I would still be wearing down my heart and other organs through continued metal toxicity, having massive chest pain and anxiety and be covering all of this with mood altering medication.

Instead, I am back to feeling healthy.

I am immensely grateful and thankful for the process of Nutritional Response Therapy and for Dr. Gendron himself.

Sincerely,

Sarah J. Barendse
