5 Day Post Holiday Juice Cleanse!

Even the healthiest and most well intentioned of us can get derailed during the holiday season. Parties to attend, dinners to go to, celebrations, which include food and drink, are everywhere.

Now that we have made it to 2015 it’s time to reset and get back on track. One fantastic and easy way to do that is with a juice fast. Having had such fantastic results, I had a multitude of people asking me for directions. Here they are!

DIRECTIONS:

1. Upon waking
Drink (2) – 8oz glasses of water with lemon or lime added for extra detoxification.
2. Throughout the day: Drink (4) 12oz. glasses of juice
3. After each juice, drink 16oz. of water or more.

NOTES ON JUICE FASTS:

By “juice” I am referring to fresh juices made of vegetables and fruits with spices added in if you choose. (Turmeric and Ginger are two great choices). Please do not do a juice fast with store bought juices. They are not fresh and are often depleted of vitamins, minerals, and have additives as well as sugar, high fructose corn syrup, and even artificial sweeteners, which are all toxic. *Please, if at all possible, use organic non-gmo fruits and veggies.

When a juice reads “natural flavors” – it can be made from just about anything – including MSG and or artificial sweeteners. This will only serve to add in more toxins and defeat the purpose of the cleanse and sabotage your results!

It is easiest to make or buy all of the juices in the morning so you don’t have to run out to get anything. Having everything prepared helps to keep you motivated and quell the urge to cheat.

I have found that juicing yourself is not any less cost than having the fruits and veggies juiced for you. If you have a Whole Foods or Organic market with a juice bar it really can save time and mess to clean up with out additional cost.

The first day is always the hardest. We are used to the routine of eating breakfast, lunch, dinner and sometimes snacks. Keeping yourself busy seems to be key in success, at least for myself.

Juicing is an amazingly powerful way to clear and clean your body. This article lists very accurately the cleansing phases and what your body goes through as the cleanse progresses.

MY EXPERIENCE:
DAY 1
1 glass grapefruit juice
8 glasses of water
1 glass of carrot juice
½ bottle of grape kombucha
1 glass of beet, parsley, celery, and cilantro

By only 1:30pm I was already experiencing detoxification symptoms. My face was hot and flushed and I felt a bit teary eyed and a little dizzy. I slept for 11 hours that evening. As your body clears itself out, rest is needed.

DAY 2
1 glass grapefruit juice
8 glasses of water
2 glasses of carrot juice
1 glass beet, parsley, celery juice, horseradish
½ bottle grape kombucha
Added lemon and lime essential oils to water for extra detoxification power

I was still very teary eyed, sniffly, and blah feeling. Again I needed more sleep than usual. I clocked in 10 hours of pillow time.

DAY 3
1 glass grapefruit juice
8 glasses of water
2 glasses of carrot juice
1 glass beet, parsley, celery juice, horseradish
½ bottle grape kombucha
Added lemon and lime essential oils to water for extra detoxification power

On the third day of detoxification I will be honest. I felt awful. It’s like having a major head cold. My tongue was coated white and even a tongue scraper would not get it all off. Though I am glad I chose to do this for my health, it was difficult to go through. I will say though – I was not hungry at all during these first days. I missed food on a habitual and psychological level only.

DAY 4
1 glass fresh squeezed orange juice
2 glasses carrot juice
1 glass celery, cucumber, parsley, apple
Added lemon and lime essential oils to water for extra detoxification power
9 glasses of water

By day 4 I was feeling better than the previous day, but I was still experiencing some detox symptoms: slight headache & watery eyes.

I have had friends ask me “Why are you doing that if it’s making you feel bad?”

My answer is that feeling like this now and allowing my body to clean itself out on a cellular level will prevent sickness and disease.
To me, it is very worth the inconvenience.

DAY 5
1 glass carrot juice
1 glass celery, cucumber, parsley, broccoli, cilantro
2 glasses of beet, apple, carrot, celery, ginger
Added lemon and lime essential oils to water for extra detoxification power
9 glasses of water
BIG SALAD!!!!

By day 5 I was still experiencing some detox symptoms so I decided to continue the cleanse, modified. I am juicing during the day and at night eating a big organic salad.
From there I will merge into eating all organic again including as much raw food as possible.

For more on detox symptoms please read my article “Is your detox making you feel sick?”

RESULTS:

My skin looks clearer and has more of a glow
My hair is shinier
I lost -7lbs
-10.5” overall
I feel better with more energy
All food cravings have stopped
My appetite has decreased and I am still pretty satisfied to drink juice all day

You would never run your car endlessly without the maintenance of a good oil change once in a while, so why do that to your body? Our bodies are intended to be self cleaning (as is the argument I hear often). I agree, however, they were not designed to deal with an an endless array of toxins in our food, air and being put on our bodies in varying ways. The majority of us are on toxic overload….. It can lead to feeling run down, ill and ultimately disease or death.

I highly recommend juice fasting once in a while! Your body will thank you!

Sarah’s Top Picks: Non-Toxic Personal and Household Products!

For several years now I have been writing about how toxic our worlds have become including our own households. It has been an adventure in label reading and research trying to find alternatives to the everyday grocery and department store stocked chemical laden products we are used to.

My first goal started with finding products that have not been animal tested. From there I then added to that wanting ingredients that you could pronounce and recognize as well as know that they are from nature and not scientifically created and safe to use on your body and in your home.

I do not mean GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe – The FDA’s sticker of approval) I mean that they are actually healthy to use and not damaging to the body in any way.

The two are totally different categories as the FDA has approved levels of highly toxic, corrosive and carcinogenic substances in just about everything on the market.

It has been trial and error once finding items that meet the criteria.

Many products, though the ingredients are good, just don’t work well.

I have wasted a lot of time and money over the past few years. In doing so I think I can save you some legwork and give you a point in the right direction.

PRODUCTS THAT WORK AND KEEP YOU HEALTHY!

HOUSEHOLD CLEANING:

CLEAN by Healthy Home Company is the only product I seem to need!

CLEAN brings back memories of childhood, when ad campaigns all said that your dishes should be “squeaky clean”… with CLEAN, they actually squeak! Plus it smells like tangerines which makes you actually want to clean. Aromatic motivation!

*This has been incredible for my shower doors and for washing my dog! I don’t really need any other cleaner besides this. Though they also make one called TOUGH for stains and gooier or tougher jobs.

*This also works for laundry detergent!

PERSONAL CARE:

LOTION: I am completely in love with the lotion from Healthy Home. It is super easy to find in your drawer because well, it’s named LOTION. Smooth, silky, fast absorbing – it works wonderfully on your entire body, face included.

BUY SPRAY: REPEL – Healthy Home – This spray on is non aerosol and smells nice. Bugs don’t seem to think so though. I put it on myself and my dog before going for a walk and we remain bite free!

SUNBLOCK: Yep, Healthy Home again. SPF 32 with no chemicals. Amazing! One of the biggest causes of skin cancer is not the sun, it is the chemicals used in commercial sunscreens. Highly recommend if you feel you must use a sunscreen.

DEODORANT: Ok this was the toughest of the tough for me to find. I have tried probably two dozen different kinds and most of them are just not effective and even in some cases caused me to sweat! FRESH from Healthy Homes is an alcohol base (so don’t shave your underarms right before putting it on – I found that out the hard way). Spray on, let it dry and you are good to go all day! Without the dangerous aluminum and other chemicals common in deodorants and antiperspirants. Though this isn’t an antiperspirant, I don’t seem to sweat while wearing it.

TOOTH PASTE:

Doterra’s ON GUARD tooth paste is amazing. It tastes like Celestial Seasoning’s Orange Zinger tea and truly helps freshen, clean and heal your mouth, gums and teeth. It contains essential oils and no fluoride.

SMILE – By Healthy Home is their new tooth paste which is also a fantastic choice.

MOUTHWASH:
Make your own – Pinch of pink salt, water, and 1 drop of essential oil (peppermint, on guard blend from doterra, wild orange, or other oil of your choice (make sure its one that can be taken internally). Swish, gargle and rinse!

SHAMPOO:
SHAMPOO (Named just that) From Healthy Home is fantastic. As is doTERRA’s Salon essentials. However, if you have color treated hair? These will suck the color out of them super fast. They are detoxifying shampoos and hair dye is toxic.
If your hair is color treated? – Best so far has been PomSmooth Shampoo by Juice Organics.

CONDITIONER:
PomSmooth Conditioner by Juice Organics Hair Care. Healthy and good!

FACIAL SCRUB:
Amber’s Earth Buffing Grains hands down beat most facials. It exfoliates and cleanses the skin leaving it smooth.

FACE WASH:
The Vermont Soap Company’s Honey Soap. Honey is a citrus clove blend with notes added from local honey. I use this right after the scrub.

PERFUMES:
Once you get used to using organic items I have to tell you, perfumes? Stink! I can’t even consider spraying myself with them anymore. As the fragrance industry is not regulated literally anything can be used, however toxic. I like to use oils. Essential oils by themselves though do not have much staying power, so it is best to mix them in an oil base. You can do it yourself or buy blends. My favorites so far come from Esoterica in New Orleans.  Money oil and Aquarius oil are what I personally choose, but of course choose your own!

MAKE UP:

Juice Beauty is where I have finally landed in buying make up. Commercial make up is terrible for your body. It can contain a whole array of chemicals where as this is organic. Their formulations are made without parabens, petroleum, propylene or butylene glycol, sodium lauryl sulfates, pesticides, phthalates, artificial dyes or synthetic fragrances. Their products are never tested on animals. It combines juice extracts and minerals.

SHAVING CREAM:

I have started just using the Vermont Honey Soap to shave. It works just as well without all the chemicals in shaving cream.

CHAPSTICK:
Moldavite Essence Lip Balm –
by Gaia’s Healing Gifts. This is the smoothest lip balm I have ever used. It is not waxy at all and keeps your lips from getting chapped.

There is no need to flood your body with chemicals in order to maintain the status quo appearance…. Thanks to companies like these – We no longer have to die to be beautiful.

I highly recommend that you click through to all of the linked sites as they offer tons more products than I have mentioned in this article!

Sincerely,

Sarah

JELL-O No! Why This dessert is anything but healthy

Jell-O

It’s colorful, wiggly and fun. It is one of the most versitile creative foods on the market. You can make jell-o molds, jell-o shots, jell-o gigglers, parfaits, mix flavors, colors, it is essentially a fruit party in a box. Jell-o has been a favorite of kids and adults alike since the brand was founded in 1897.

Gelatin itself dates back to as early as the 1400’s. It is a protein produced from collagen that comes out of animal bones and connective tissues when they are boiled. It became popular during the Victorian era especially among the upper crust of society. In its original form it was time consuming to produce until 1845 when a patent for powdered gelatin was issued. This made it more readily accessible to the general public. It wasn’t long after that that flavors were added and a dessert treat known as Jell-O was founded.

Modern day Jell-o is primarily chemical…

Lets take a look:

Ingredients:

-Sugar – Sugar has been linked to obesity, and suspected of, or fully implicated as a cause in the occurrence of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, dementia, macular degeneration, and tooth decay. It has highly addictive properties. Much of the sugar produced is genetically modified.

-Gelatin is a complex mixture of proteins derived from partial hydrolysis of collagen extracted from animal hides and bones. It has little nutritional value. Though we must add that gelatin aides digestion and has been successfully used in the treatment of many intestinal disorders. The reason of the beneficial effect on digestions is because gelation is a hydrophilic colloidal substance. This means that it attracts and holds liquids. It facilitates digestion by attracting digestive juices to food in the gut and by distributing digestive action evenly through all the food. Consuming good amounts of gelatin with every meal greatly reduces the digestive stress resulting from the consumption of processed and cooked food or from sub-optimal digestive function. Gelatin also improves digestibility of beans and legumes, grains, dairy and meat protein. HEALTHY SUGGESTION: buy PLAIN GELATIN and Mix it with your favorite Juice. Allow it to set, and POOF you have homemade jello without all the chemicals.

-Adipic Acid (pH control agent; Flavoring agent; Preservative, controls tartness) It increases shelf life. The FDA cautions to not ingest more than 227 grams per 100lbs of body weight daily.

Contains less than 2% of:

-Natural and Artificial Flavor – As “Natural” remains undefined by the FDA this can contain pretty much anything.

-Disodum Phosphate and Sodium Citrate (Flavoring agent; Emulsifier; Texturizer; pH control agent) It is an inorganic salt.

-Fumaric Acid (for tartness)

-Red 40, Blue 1 (and other assorted colors) – new studies now show synthetic preservatives and artificial coloring agents aggravate ADD & ADHD symptoms. Several major studies show academic performance increased and disciplinary problems decreased in large non-ADD student populations when artificial ingredients, including artificial colors, were eliminated from school food programs. Many of these colors include levels approved by the FDA of arsenic and mercury and have been banned in the European Union.

-BHA (preservative) Though the FDA recognizes it as GRAS (generally recognized as safe), The National institute of Health says it’s “reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen.” It has been linked to cancer and has been banned in many countries.

And alternately – in sugar free jell-o the sweetener replacing sugar is:

-Aspartame (Phenylketonurics contains Phenylalanine) Created from the excretions of genetically modified bacteria.
What’s in it: Phenylalanine, aspartic acid and methanol. Reported side effects: Headaches, fibromyalgia, anxiety, memory loss, arthritis, abdominal pain, nausea, depression, heart palpitations, irritable bowel syndrome, seizures, neurological disorders, vision problems, brain tumors and weight gain.

– Acesulfame Potassium is a potassium salt containing methylene chloride, a known carcinogen.
Reported side effects: Long-term exposure to methylene chloride can cause nausea, headaches, mood problems, impairment of the liver and kidneys, problems with eyesight and possibly cancer. Acesulfame-K may contribute to hypoglemica.

-Nutritional Content
Fat Free
70 calories Regular / 10 calories sugar free
19 grams of sugar carbs / 0 net carbs sugar free
40-55 milligrams of sodium
2 grams of protein / 1 gram of protein sugar free
No nutrients or vitamins

Why on earth this is fed to people in hospitals on a regular basis is beyond me. Not only does it have no nutritional content and barely any energy from calories, but it also contains numerous chemicals which – though FDA approved – are shown to harm the body.

The conclusion? Jell-o may be fun, but it most certainly is not healthy.
