Parosmia – The Lingering Covid Effect the News is Ignoring While it Plagues Tens of Thousands Worldwide

It has been widely reported that during an active COVID infection people often lose their sense of smell and taste. It has been one of the signature telltale symptoms. But what isn’t being shared is that even after many recover, this problem can linger. Worse yet, it can mutate and become hugely problematic for those who are left with this reminder.

Parosmia is a disorder caused by a viral infection (such as Covid) where their receptors become damaged, and they develop a smell disorder. If you thought no sense of smell was bad, what if you woke up one morning and scents you know and loved – as simple as lemon and coffee suddenly smelled like rotting flesh and dirt?

This is the disturbing reality many are living in right now.

When smell and taste are distorted to this extent it’s not just annoying it’s a problem when it comes to being able to eat. Meats, vegetables, even fruits – can become so grossly nonpalatable that many are finding themselves at a loss as to what to even try to eat. This can lead to reduced appetite, depression, weight loss, or gain if the only foods you can stomach are high-fat high sugar junk foods. This bizarre affliction can make you feel like you have an eating disorder and very much mess with your mental wellbeing.

Along with the problems associated with eating these individuals can no longer smell burning food, smoke, or gas – which can put their lives in danger. It also introduces the problem of not being able to tell if food is legitimately spoiled or rotten which could lead to food poisoning.

These phantom smells have been described as:

  • Rotten meat
  • Sewage
  • Old garbage
  • Metallic
  • Ammonia
  • Vinegar
  • Old gym socks
  • Skunk
  • Sickly sweet cheap perfume

As of a survey in June of 2021 it was found that roughly 10% of those who had covid ended up with some level of parosmia. Half gradual onset and half sudden onset of symptoms.

The most common foods that triggered these awful tastes and smells were:

  • Meats
  • Citrus
  • Garlic
  • Ginger
  • Onions
  • Eggs
  • Coffee

There are online support groups that have formed on social media where sufferers can find support and others who are able to relate to this crazy affliction. Parosmia isn’t something that can be fully understood unless you have the unfortunate luck to experience it. Especially in this high inflation economy none of us have extra money to waste on foods we simply cannot eat. This is a major issue for those affected.

The big question – How long does this state of being last?

Covid induced parosmia can gradually fade with time. It can take months or even years to see improvement.

In surveys done, 49.3 percent reported that their parosmia improved within 3 months. The remaining 50.7 percent said their parosmia lasted over 3 months. The average time is 3.4 months and can range from 9 days to 6 months.

Why it happens

It’s possible that infection with the coronavirus damages the receptors and nerves involved with our sense of smell. While this damage can often be repaired over time, it may cause some disruption in how we perceive odors.

Is there any help? What is the treatment?

Smell training is recommended – Essential oils used are lemon, rose, clove, and eucalyptus. Smell them for 20 seconds each at least twice per day. You can add in any others you so choose. This has had minor success.

Suggestions:

Avoid foods and smells that trigger you. Do not force foods that taste putrid it will only make you miserable. Try to get enough protein, even if it means using alternate sources such as pea protein or pumpkin, or soy. Trial and error. Drink lots of water and get plenty of sleep so your body can work on the repair. Most importantly don’t lose hope.

It has been 5 months post covid for me personally. I lost sense of smell and taste completely for a week during the infection and though it returned to nearly normal afterward, normal quickly faded away. I first noticed something was off in eating tangerines. I thought for sure they had sprayed them with some chemical and I kept trying to wash it off. As it turns out it was the citrus oil in the rhine I was smelling.

From there more and more foods started tasting off and then it moved into smelling like dead zombie vomit at best. I had been stuck in this nasty smell/taste zone for a couple of months. I was getting depressed and anxious from it as I was having a very hard time eating enough. I would go to bed hungry and wake up starving. I have been tracking calories to make sure I eat enough.

MIRACULOUSLY – last night my husband bought a new coffee and asked me to smell the grounds. I was just humoring him and did. I was shocked – I could smell it! A few hours later I realized I could also stomach the smell of citrus again! I then went on a sniffing rampage around the house smelling anything and everything I could get my hot little hands on. Much of it I could smell! Things I hadn’t smelled in months!

I did notice that if I breathed in too hard, I would smell the item PLUS the rotten smell… So, I decided to take the win and back off. I don’t know if the coffee triggered something, or it was just time for it to repair and coincidence. I do know coffee beans and grounds are used to clear the nose when perfume shopping, maybe it did actually help? It sure cannot hurt to try! I would love to hear about your experiences.

All I can say is I HOPE this newfound sense of smell stays. It’s still shaky, almost like learning how to walk again but I’ll take it!

Holding on to excess weight

Is there a correlation between spicy food and metabolism?

There are currently 1.6 billion overweight adults in the world, according to the World Health Organization. That number is expected to grow by at least 40% over the next decade. Where does the United States Rank? When looking at body mass index (BMI), 30 and over is considered obese. The USA comes in at a whopping number 9 out of 200 countries ranked, meaning we are the 9th fattest country in the world only coming in behind Nauru, Micronesia, Cook Islands, Tonga, Niue, Samoa, Palau and Kuwait.

While it is in no way the entire solution to our epidemic, it certainly can help!

Calories are not the enemy

Calories are not the enemy. This may be a statement that makes many people uncomfortable. We have been inundated by the media from every angle for the past couple of decades to believe otherwise.

Processed food packages are marked “diet” “low calorie” “low fat” and marked with names like “weight watchers” “lean cuisine” enticing consumers with the false implied promise of becoming thin “if” you eat their products.

The truth is we need calories. They are one of the very reasons we eat in the first place.

What is a calorie?

A Calorie is a unit of energy. Your body runs on them. No calories = no energy = tired you!

It has been spouted by many weight loss gurus that “a calorie is a calorie” and that the math is all that counts… More calories burnt than taken in equals weight loss.

 Again, this is not the full story.

A calorie is not a calorie. They are not all created equal. The old saying “Garbage in / Garbage out” also applies.

 Why are people so fat?

The diet industry would have us believe it is because you have no will power. Because you have no will power you need things outside of yourself to help you – diet pills, shakes, appetite suppressants, this fad diet, that fad diet… Listen to me here – it is all crap.

So what is the truth?
The truth is we are being malnourished.

Yes I see you looking sideways at me, thinking “how can malnourishment be the problem when the problem is excess weight and eating too much?”

The problem starts with the soil. It no longer contains the trace minerals that used to be absorbed into our fruits, vegetables and grains. Now add to that the majority of what people eat are now GMO (genetically modified) which means they have been scientifically altered. The reason they have been altered is so that they will produce more crops faster and more resistant to bugs. Growing faster means less actual maturation and they yield less nutrition. Add to that they also cellularly produce their own pesticide internally, which we consume as well and you are eating poisonous non-nutritious vegetables and fruits and grains that can actually cause disease and severe allergic reaction in many people.

Compounding this problem is our meat supply – if you still eat meat, our livestock is being mistreated, miss fed, cooped up in hazardous conditions, and treated with high levels of antibiotics in many cases. These are not healthy animals and they do not produce healthy meats.

People are not cooking for themselves at home as in decades past. Fast food, restaurants, boxed and packaged items are the norm. Processing, preservatives, canning, all of it leeches the nutrition out of our foods leaving us eating essentially dead food. We are what we eat… and we are fast becoming a nation of living dead humans.

When we eat nutritionally deficient foods our bodies give us the cue to eat more because what we just ate frankly did not make the cut.

That is where over eating comes into play. You aren’t weak. You are legitimately hungry for real food and nutrition and your body is screaming for you to help it. The problem is that most don’t recognize the problem and keep on with more servings of yet more nutritionally deficient foods. This leads to weight gain.

When you eat actual organic non-gmo fresh foods you are getting not just calories. You are getting vitamins, nutrients and actual sustenance. When your body receives this? You stop being hungry as it has found what it was searching for.

When you eat good live nutritious foods from the earth that have not been messed with by science or processing you find that you really don’t need to count calories. Your body will naturally work with you and stop eating when you are full and have had enough.

 

Recommendations:

-Drink as close to a gallon of non fluoridated water daily

-Add in ½ teaspoon of Pink Himalayan Salt (this restores the 72 trace minerals missing from the soil that you need to live and be healthy) *pink salt will not raise your blood pressure, and in fact may lower it.

-Stop with the table salt entirely. Just throw it out.

-Eat organic, local, non gmo veggies, fruits and grains sparingly as much as possible.

-Limit meats, and do free range grass fed when possible.

-Eggs, same thing – organic free range, cage free

-Drink water with fresh squeezed lemon or lime upon waking daily

-Eat when you are hungry. Follow your body’s cues… small meals/healthy snacks 3-4-5 times a day is great.

-And of course get out there and move. Be active.
